Barbara Schmidt Heins is a conceptual German artist who works independently and as a collaborative duo with her sister Gabriele. Both sisters were participants in Documenta 6 (1977) and 7 (1982) for which they created one-of-a-kind handmade books. Schmidt Heins’ creates photographic and textual ready-mades that often deal with the subject of time.

Twins Barbara and Gabriele Schmidt-Heins were born in 1949 near Hamburg. They are the daughters of the photographer Hildi Schmidt-Heins and granddaughters of the photographer Wilhelm Heins. The sisters studied from 1968 to 1974 at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Since 1974, both sisters create art individually and as a collaborative duo. Both are conceptual artists who create photographic and textual readymades.
