A combination of photographic illustration and text, Nettles first incorporated her mother's poetry and for one book the children's story, The Nymph of the Highland, written by her then thirteen year old sister Connie. In this tale, Aquarius, a naiad (water nymph), defends small animals and challenges the lords of water and land, eventually creating peace across the highlands.
